What is IPTV?

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Instead of reaching your TV through an aerial, cable or satellite, the video arrives over your internet connection.

How it works

A provider sends live channels or on-demand video as a stream over the internet. A player app on your device receives that stream and shows it on screen. The app itself contains no channels. It only plays what the source details you enter point to.

What you need

  • A stable internet connection.
  • A compatible device: a smart TV, TV box, Fire TV stick, phone, tablet or computer.
  • A player app installed on that device.
  • Source details from your service provider, in one of the formats below.

Common terms

Term What it means
M3U playlist A list of channels, usually given as a web link or a file. You paste the link into your player app.
Xtream Codes login A server address, username and password that the app uses to load channels, categories and the programme guide for you.
Portal URL A single address used by some set-top boxes and apps to load a provider’s channel list.
EPG The electronic programme guide, which shows what is on now and next.
VOD Video on demand: films and series you can start at any time.
Buffering Pauses while the app waits for more of the stream to arrive.

Internet speed

As a rough guide, standard definition needs around 3 to 5 Mbps, HD around 8 to 10 Mbps and 4K around 25 Mbps or more. Other devices on the same network use bandwidth too, so leave some headroom. A cable connection to your TV or box is steadier than Wi-Fi.

IPTV technology is legal, and many licensed services use it. Streaming content you have no right to watch may be illegal where you live. Check that your source is a licensed one.
